THE CHILD, THE FAMILY, THE CHALLENGE
The
effects of childhood disease are not only devastating and destructive
to the child but take an enormous toll on the entire family. The
parents, the siblings and the entire extended family are ravaged
in some way by the disease. The daily struggle to maintain some
sense of normalcy while coping with the child’s illness
presents challenges which are incomprehensible to most people.
The
Committee to Benefit the Children (CBC) is a non-profit volunteer
group dedicated to improving the quality of life for children and
their families who face cancer, leukemia and serious blood disorders.
The CBC’s mission is to provide
families facing these challenges with support and resources that
are not available elsewhere.
The
CBC was formed in 1980 by a small group of resilient parents whose
children were treated at the Hematology-Oncology Clinic at St.
Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia,
PA.
Over
the years, the CBC has been shaped by parents whose lives have
been forever changed by their child’s life-threatening
diagnosis and by a quiet band of volunteers dedicated to giving
something back to humanity.
Today,
the CBC helps hundreds of area children and their families. The
group provides resources for treatment, care, social services and
basic family necessities. The CBC remains true to the founding
parents’ objectives: improving medical care
and the quality of life for the children.
CBC VOLUNTEERS AND SUPPORTERS
Individuals come from across the tri-state region to work as CBC
volunteers. They come from all walks of life to help where help is
needed.
The reasons for joining CBC are as varied as the individuals involved.
Some personally experience the tragedy of a sick child. Others join
the CBC because they are thankful for their good fortune and want
to help others facing the daunting challenge of a sick child.
They donate their time or invest in a sponsorship or advertisement
at one of our fund raising events. They work independently promoting
the CBC at the office for United Way Donor Options. They volunteer
at one of the events or parties for the children.
CBC involvement is flexible and volunteers can tailor their commitment
to their lifestyle and resources. If you are interested in helping
these children and their families and becoming a friend of CBC, please
email us at cbc@cbckids.org.
Please be sure to visit www.cbckids.org for more information
about the CBC.
THE CBC AT WORK
For over twenty years, the CBC Golf Tournament at Cedarbrook Country
Club in Blue Bell, PA, the CBC Passion for Fashion Show, the CBC
Caribbean Sunsplash Party and other fund raising efforts too numerous
to mention here have raised hundreds and hundreds of thousands of
dollars to help the children and their families confront these destructive
diseases.
The essence of the CBC compels the heart to realize that through
action, change and success are possible. The CBC is volunteer and
the board of directors is very active in working with the social
workers and the children and their families to see that all funds
go where needed most.
