3:00
pm. The Beers and Breweries of Colonial Philadelphia
Presented by Richard Wagner, Philadelphia Brewery Historian
Richard
Wagner, Brewery Historian, will chronicle the development of the city’s
brewing industry beginning with its first English brewer, William
Frampton, who built a bake and brew house in 1685. He shows where
the first dozen or so breweries were and discusses the beers they
brewed and their significance to the colonists’ diet as well
as the city’s economy.
Rich
Wagner has been researching Pennsylvania brewing history for the past
28 years. In 1991 he brewed the first batch of beer in the bake and
brew house at Pennsbury Manor. Since then he’s constructed his
own equipment and has taken his colonial brewing demonstration “from
coast to coast.” He is currently working on a book where he,
as colonial brewer, will take the reader on a virtual Philadelphia
tavern tour circa 1685 and 1785.
